Alta Hotel

The Alta Hotel, among the best of Costa Rica's small boutique hotels, offers its guests a sublime combination of understated luxury, pampering services, and San Jose's finest cuisine. Small, special, intimate: Alta consists of only 23 units (18 double rooms, 4 suites, and 1 Master suite).

The beautifully sculpted hotel cascades down Alto de Las Palomas (the Hill of the Doves), providing exquisite views of the volcanoes, mountains and valley that surround San Jose. The carved look melds different styles --- Spanish-Moorish medieval, countryside elegant --- into one graceful structure. The vaulted ceilings in the paseo and wide stone stairway lead castle-like from the reclusive guest rooms to the warm glow of La Luz Restaurant.

The hotel has an old-world ambiance, offering a sharp contrast to the modern, hotel look. When you arrive you will feel like you've entered an elegant hacienda in 17th Century Spain. The setting is warm and welcoming, but not pretentious. Go up to your room, relax and savor the view, soon an exquisite feast will be served in La Luz.

Alta consists of only 23 units: 18 double rooms, 4 suites, and 1 Master suite. The rooms have the overall look of elegant austerity as if an old monastery had been converted into an art academy. They are clean and simple, almost humble in design. The finishes are rustic.

Sculpted pedestals serve as television stands; rustic, exposed copper plumbing decorates the bathrooms; terra-cotta tiles cover the bathroom and bedroom floors; hand-made forged hooks hold a bath towel (all made on-site by a local artisan who used a bellows to smith the hotel's metal lamps).

Five years or 20 years from now, the hotel will not have changed much because of the hotel’s timeless style and the incorporation of fine design and fabrics. Pristine Egyptian cotton sheets and duvets cover the beds. Our bathrooms offer exquisitely tiled vanities and a host of thoughtful amenities.

Perhaps the finest features of the hotel are the large balconies that overlook the Valley of the Sun and bring the exquisite view into the room. Here is a great place to breath the crisp air, enjoy the fusion cuisine of Restaurante La Luz in the rays of the departing sun, or admire the cobalt blue-tiled elliptical swimming pool below.
