The Hotel Fonda Vela is dedicated to the idea of ecotourism in harmony with nature. And you are invited!
The Latin root of the word Fonda means a place of rest and nourishment after a long journey. Vela, or candle, represents a dedication to service and hospitality. At the Fonda Vela Hotel, you will experience the tranquil and environmentally sensitivity atmosphere of our Hotel.
The Fonda Vela Hotel is located in beautiful Monteverde, Costa Rica. Monteverde is famous for its resplendent Quetzals, the rare Three-wattled Bellbird, an abundance of orchids, and gorgeous and rare cloud forest. The refreshing climate is often referred to as ”The Eternal Spring”. The views of the Gulf of Nicoya from the Hotel’s 1400-meter elevation are spectacular. The Fonda Vela Hotel in Monteverde is an ideal destination for relaxing and enjoying the wonders of the tropics. A visit of two nights or more is recommended.
We, the brothers Paul and Steven Smith, built the Hotel Fonda Vela to be a nurturing experience - personally, environmentally, culturally, and spiritually. The feelings that brought us here are what we want to share with you, our guests. You play an important part in fulfilling this dream. With veils of mist, enchanting forests, rugged mountains, and incredible sunsets, Monteverde draws you back to nature, as it has done for us.
Nestled on a beautifully landscaped property, the Fonda Vela Hotel has nine buildings, each designed with natural lighting, privacy, and warmth. All rooms have king or queen-size beds, refrigerator, mini-bar, coffee maker, telephone, and cable TV. Spacious Junior Suites each have a queen and king-size bed. Standard rooms are smaller, with two queen-size beds.
Throughout the Fonda Vela you will find paintings of our father, Paul Warren Smith, an early settler of the property. Dad’s works, along with other artists of Monteverde, reflect peaceful living in harmony with our planet. We are so proud of Hotel Fonda Vela’s spirit of conservation, culture, and our community’s life style.
On the 35-acre property, you will find lush forest and verdant pastures, excellent for bird watching and hiking. In this tranquil setting, it is possible to see parrots and toucans that come to feed in the wild fruit trees.
The world famous 10,500-hectare Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a beautiful 15 minute walk from the Hotel (or you can go by cab or car).
